SAISD Board Trustee Lanny Layman Retires After 20 Years of Dedicated Service

On Monday, September 19, 2022 at the San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees Regular Meeting, Mr. Lanny Layman, Board Trustee for over 20 years, retired from his position as Member at-Large. The Board of Trustees voted 7-0 to appoint Mrs. Pam Duncan, a retired SAISD educator and long-time San Angelo community member, to serve the remainder of Mr. Layman's term. Mrs. Duncan participated in her first SAISD board meeting as a trustee after she was sworn in through the oath of office.

During the regular board meeting, Board Trustee Dr. Taylor Kingman offered remarks on Mr. Layman’s time as a board member, “He served as a steady voice advocating for all children in our district, our staff and our community. His demeanor, wisdom and kind words will be missed on our board team as he has exemplified servant leadership and his mentorship has helped grow many of us as board members.”

Mr. Layman was first elected to serve on the SAISD Board of Trustees in May of 2002, and has since held positions such as Trustee, Vice President and President during his tenure. His consistent dedication through the years, heart for service, and visionary leadership has a lasting impact on generations of San Angelo youth and equipped them with opportunities to be future-ready. Mr. Layman's background as a businessman and caring parent of his own SAISD graduates has offered great insight and guidance to the District. On behalf of SAISD and our community, we thank Mr. Layman for his commitment to the students of SAISD and lasting influence.

“Twenty years ago, the constituents of San Angelo made a decision to elect an individual that was passionate about his community, cared deeply about people, and believed that all students should experience success in their public schools. Lanny Layman’s service and leadership has guided our schools and community for over two decades,” said SAISD Superintendent Dr. Carl Dethloff. “Under his careful watch, I grew as a leader, person, and father, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served alongside him. Our school system has benefited immensely from his wise counsel, financial acumen, and ability to listen to the needs of our families to better serve them. While we will miss Mr. Layman’s support and leadership, we are looking forward to the expertise Mrs. Pam Duncan brings to our board with her years of experience in education and her heart for best serving the needs of our students, families, and staff.”

San Angelo ISD welcomes Mrs. Pam Duncan to the SAISD Board of Trustees. Mrs. Duncan has vast experience in education, specifically here in San Angelo, serving in several capacities at our secondary campuses including 22 years at Glenn Middle School teaching 7th grade mathematics and as an Instructional Specialist. She also served as an Instructional Coach helping teachers thrive in their roles at Central High School on Oakes, Central High School, and Lake View High School.

“I want to serve as an advocate for all children and everyone in this district that plays a vital role in our students ultimate success,” said Mrs. Duncan.

Mrs. Duncan and her family joined the San Angelo community in 1988. She has two daughters, Genna and Cheyenne, both products of SAISD and graduates of Central High School. Mrs. Duncan is currently a Coach at OrangeTheory Fitness.

We thank all of our SAISD Board Trustees who serve in an unpaid, voluntary position for their servant leadership and commitment to our students, the future of San Angelo, our educators and staff, and to furthering the SAISD mission of engaging students in a relevant and inspiring education that produces future-ready graduates.
