United We Read and San Angelo READS! Celebrate Second-Grade Book Giveaway

Last month, nearly 900 second-grade students across San Angelo ISD celebrated literacy and the power of kindness during the United Way of the Concho Valley’s United We Read event. The celebration featured a special reading of "Superbuns!" by Diane Kredensor, presented by Ashley Ammons, United Way of the Concho Valley President and CEO, at Glenmore Elementary. Following the reading, students participated in a story-centered craft, designing their own “supershields” to represent their personal superpowers.

“Our partnership with the United Way of the Concho Valley elevates the work of San Angelo READS! and helps us place meaningful books directly into the hands of our students,” said Sun Cha, SAISD Director of Communications. “Through this book, students learned that kindness, helpfulness, and being true to yourself are real superpowers that make a difference every day – both in school and beyond. When children recognize themselves in the stories they hear and read, literacy becomes personal and powerful.”

United We Read is a collaboration between the UWCV and SAISD’s literacy initiative, San Angelo READS!, which encourages reading to and with children to foster a lifelong love of learning. We are grateful for United Way’s investment in our students and their continued commitment to literacy in our community.

About San Angelo READS!

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the District in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is in providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.

SAISD kicked off San Angelo READS! on December 9, 2020 with the inaugural San Angelo Reads! Day, a day when literacy was celebrated at every SAISD elementary campus with literacy fun like read-ins, unveiling book vending machines and a gift of a book to all SAISD third-graders compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation. Inside and outside our classrooms, SAISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future success, thus building a better tomorrow for our students and community.
